On August 27, 2024, the ASEAN Heads of Competition Agencies (AHCA) issued a Joint Statement on the Acceleration of Regional Cooperation in Competition Law and Policy to strengthen regional cooperation in competition law and policy and to complement the momentum driven by the recently concluded ASEAN Framework Agreement on Competition (AFAC) negotiation. The development of the Joint Statement was led by Indonesia based on their Background Study on “Strengthening Regional Cooperation on Competition Policy and Law”.

The Joint Statement underlined the AHCA commitments in strengthening regional cooperation, particularly in tackling emerging challenges such as cross-border mergers and cartels, abuse of dominance in regional markets, and trade barriers that distort competition in the regional markets.
