PCC strengthens competition advocacy network with training for SUCs

The Philippine Competition Commission (PCC) reinforced its advocacy work with the academe as it held a refresher course for faculty members of state universities to strengthen their capacity in promoting competition.

The course, held on November 10-15 in Quezon City, forms part of the PCC’s Champions of Competition-Competition Local Advocacy Network (CLAN) Project. The project leverages the stature and expertise of these state universities in their localities towards promoting the National Competition Policy (NCP). Implementation of the NCP is one of the cross-cutting strategies under the current administration’s Philippine Development Plan 2023-2028.

The 10 state universities that sent members of their law, economics and business faculties to take part in the CLAN are the following:

• Batangas State University
• Bulacan State University
• Bukidnon State University
• Mariano Marcos State University
• Mindanao State University
• Negros Oriental State University
• Palawan State University
• Sultan Kudarat State University
• University of Eastern Philippines
• West Visayas State University

Under the CLAN Project, training teams from the participating state universities help lay the ground for the rollout of the NCP in their respective areas, thereby contributing to a more competitive business environment in those localities.

“Your efforts will build upon previous initiatives to raise awareness about the PCC, the PCA (Philippine Competition Act), and competition,” PCC Chairperson Michael Aguinaldo told the CLAN training teams from the participating state universities. “I hope CLAN participants will share their learnings with their communities. By working together, we can create a world where everyone benefits from fair competition.”

In recognizing the invaluable partnership with the participating state universities, PCC Commissioner Michael Peloton reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to “indefatigably and continuously pursue academic avenues and tools” to enhance their capacity in competition law.

By empowering the CLAN trainers, the PCC aims to foster a deeper understanding of competition principles and their practical application in areas outside the National Capital Region, which will enable local communities to actively take part in promoting fair competition and driving economic development.

The PCC is a quasi-judicial agency tasked with enforcing the PCA, which prohibits anti-competitive agreements, abuse of dominance and anti-competitive mergers and acquisitions. The Commission is also tasked with implementing the NCP, which is a whole-of-government approach to ensuring that rules, guidelines and activities of national line agencies, government-owned or -controlled corporations and local government units are aligned with competition principles.
