PCC joins panel discussion on gender and competition at APEC meeting

The Philippine Competition Commission (PCC) joined a policy dialogue that explored the intersection between competition and gender at the recent Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Competition Policy and Law Group (CPLG) Meeting 2024 in Lima, Peru.

PCC Policy and Markets Division Chief Kirsten J. Dela Cruz discussed how competition policy and gender equality intersect to support the Philippine government’s broader development goals, particularly regarding women’s economic inclusion. She highlighted the government’s commitment to equal treatment and the “Women’s Budget” policy, which requires five percent of agency budgets to be directed towards gender equality initiatives.

Canada and Mexico also shared their experiences on gender and competition initiatives in the dialogue and discussed challenges such as data gaps and prioritizing gender with limited resources.

The policy dialogue was led by the Competition Bureau Canada and joined by Lynn Robertson, Senior Counsellor, OECD Competition Division; Marissa Ginn, Ph.D., Vice President, Analysis Group, Canada; Karina Flores, Deputy Director General, Mexico Comisión Federal de Competencia Económica (COFECE) Cartels Division; Marie-Hélène Brière, Senior Competition Law Officer, Competition Bureau Canada International Affairs Directorate; and Dela Cruz of the PCC Policy and Markets Division. It was moderated by Ellen Creighton, Assistant Deputy Commissioner of Competition Bureau Canada International Affairs Directorate.
